One of the most common things I notice when working with women over 50 is this: we slowly start to disappear into safe colours.Black. Navy. Beige. Grey.
Clothes that don’t draw attention. Clothes that help us blend in rather than stand out.But here’s what fascinates me — whenever someone does wear colour, people notice.
I remember wearing a bright red top into Boots one day. As I reached the counter, the assistant stopped and said, “I hope you know how much that colour suits you.” It was such a simple comment, yet it completely lifted my day.
A friend of mine had the same experience wearing a soft coral fleece on holiday. A woman at reception went out of her way to tell her how beautiful the colour looked on her. She glowed for the rest of the day.
So why do we avoid colour as we get older?
Many women tell me they don’t want to stand out. They feel more comfortable blending into the background. There’s a quiet belief that bright colours belong to younger women — not to us.
But the truth is the opposite.
The right colour can:
Brighten your skin
Make you look more awake and radiant
Lift your mood
Bring compliments from complete strangers
Colour doesn’t make you look older.
Dull colours do.
When you wear colour, you don’t look as though you’re trying too hard. You look alive.
Confident.
Present.
At Grazella, I always say: colour is not about being loud — it’s about being seen. And every woman deserves that, at every age.So next time you’re shopping, try on the red. Try the coral. Try the colour you’re drawn to but usually put back.
You might be surprised at how the world responds. More importantly, you might be surprised at how you feel.
